We went to Myakka River State Park in southern Sarasota County. They have a "canopy walk." It's a wooden structure that you are able to go up about 30 feet, walk across another 25 feet through the trees, and then up another 45 feet to get a view above the trees. It is really neat. Once we finish compiling the pictures we took, we'll post some. There were huge spiders with massive webs. One industrious spider built his web between two palm trees. There's also a birdwalk out into the Myakka Lake that allows you an opportunity for alligator spotting and bird watching. We saw an egret and some other birds we don't recognize. No gators though.
It was an incredible 90 degrees or so (and lets not talk about the humidity), but the breeze coming off of the lake made it considerably more comfortable. After trekking through the woods we went to the outdoor outlet mall and meandered around. Overall we probably spent a good 2 to 2.5 hours hiking and walking. It was fun and different than our normal weekend routine. Plus it was a great exercise. According to our tracker toy, we killed approximately 900 calories.
So...what are you waiting for...go take a hike!
